Nena - 99 Red Balloons - Top Of The Pops

This clip features the German pop star, Nena, performing her No.1 hit single 99 Red Balloons on BBC Top Of The Pops in 1984. She's miming, of course, but that's what we came to expect on the show during the 80s, at least.

Nena's real name is Gabriele Susanne Kerner who, as I write, is now 52 years old. The song was originally released as 99 Luftballoons and topped the charts in several European countries, and also reached #2 in the U.S. The English version was released during 1984 and also topped the charts here in the UK.

As with Blondie, Nena was actually the name of a band, although the band split in 1987 and the singer has been releasing solo singles and albums ever since - she continues to achieve success in her home country. 99 Red Balloons was the only hit for Nena as a band and solo artist in the UK, and the closest the band came to another one was in 1984 with the release of Just A dream which peaked at #70.

As a solo artist during the Noughties seventeen of her singles broke into the German Top 40, with seven of these reaching the top ten. She has also been successful in Austria and China.
